Unicode Escape Encoder/Decoder

Encode text into \uXXXX Unicode escape sequences, or decode escape sequences back into readable text.

Unicode escape conversion runs locally in browser memory. Source code strings are never uploaded.

Output

Héllo, 世界!

What is Unicode Escape Encoder/Decoder?

Unicode Escape Converter provides bidirectional conversion between international text and \uXXXX hexadecimal escape sequences. It encodes non-ASCII characters into 4-digit hexadecimal escapes for safe embedding in JavaScript, TypeScript, JSON, Java, and property files. Characters beyond the Basic Multilingual Plane (> U+FFFF, such as emojis) are automatically converted into UTF-16 surrogate pairs (e.g., 🚀).

How to use Unicode Escape Encoder/Decoder

 1. 1Select Encode to convert text to \uXXXX escapes, or Decode to convert escapes back to text.
 2. 2Paste your source text or escape sequence into the input area.
 3. 3Copy the converted result directly with the Copy button.

Key features

Full UTF-16 Surrogate Pair Support

Accurately splits astral code points (> U+FFFF, including emojis) into valid surrogate pairs.

Bidirectional Translation

Switch between encoding international text and decoding \uXXXX hexadecimal sequences to plain text.

ASCII Code Preservation

Leaves standard ASCII characters (0–127) untouched while escaping non-ASCII glyphs.

Client-Side Privacy

Conversions execute strictly in browser JavaScript memory with no data sent to external servers.

Examples & use cases

Encode Accented & Multilingual Text with Emojis

Escapes non-ASCII characters and splits emojis into surrogate pairs

Input:
Héllo, 世界! 🚀
Result:
Héllo, 世界! 🚀

Decode Unicode Escapes Back to Text

Reconstructs Unicode characters and surrogate pairs

Input:
Héllo, 世界! 🚀
Result:
Héllo, 世界! 🚀

Frequently asked questions

They are commonly used in JavaScript, JSON, Java properties files, and C++ source code to safely represent Unicode characters in ASCII-only environments.
Characters with code points above U+FFFF are represented as two 16-bit surrogate code units (high surrogate \ud800–\udbff and low surrogate \udc00–\udfff).
This tool currently targets universal 4-digit \uXXXX escapes and surrogate pairs, which are compatible across all JavaScript runtimes, JSON parsers, and Java.
