What is Capital Gains Calculator?

Capital Gains Calculator estimates your Short-Term Capital Gains (STCG) and Long-Term Capital Gains (LTCG) tax on investments in India, incorporating the rationalized tax rates enacted in the Finance (No. 2) Act, 2024 (effective July 23, 2024). It computes holding durations, distinguishes between listed equity (12-month threshold) and other assets (24-month threshold), applies the increased ₹1.25 Lakhs equity LTCG annual exemption (Section 112A), and computes flat 12.5% LTCG and 20% equity STCG.

How to use Capital Gains Calculator

  1. 1Select the asset type: "Listed equity / equity MF" or "Other assets (property, gold, etc.)".
  2. 2Enter your purchase date and sale date to determine the exact holding period in months.
  3. 3Enter the total purchase price and sale price to calculate the net capital gain.
  4. 4The calculator displays the holding classification (Short-term vs Long-term), net capital gain, and estimated tax liability.

Key features

Budget 2024 Rationalized Tax Slabs

Updated for Finance (No. 2) Act, 2024 rates: 12.5% LTCG across asset classes and 20% STCG on listed equity.

₹1.25 Lakhs Equity LTCG Exemption (Single Transaction)

Applies the statutory ₹1,25,000 Section 112A exemption limit against the calculated transaction gain. Does not aggregate multiple trades across the financial year.

Holding Period Classification

Accurately determines short-term vs long-term status based on asset class (more than 12 months for equity, more than 24 months for real estate and gold for transfers on or after 23 July 2024).

Capital Loss Protection

Recognizes capital losses when sale price is below purchase price, correctly reporting zero tax liability.

Frequently asked questions

Under the Finance (No. 2) Act, 2024, effective July 23, 2024: (1) Long-Term Capital Gains (LTCG) on listed equity and equity mutual funds are taxed at 12.5% (up from 10%) with an aggregate annual exemption limit of ₹1.25 Lakhs per financial year under Section 112A. (2) Short-Term Capital Gains (STCG) on listed equity are taxed at 20% (up from 15%). (3) LTCG on other assets (real estate, gold, unlisted shares) is taxed at a flat 12.5% without indexation.
For transfers on or after 23 July 2024: listed shares and equity-oriented mutual funds require a holding period of more than 12 months to be classified as long-term (held for 12 months or less is short-term). For immovable property (land/building), gold, and unlisted assets, the long-term holding period threshold is more than 24 months (held for 24 months or less is short-term).
No. The ₹1.25 Lakhs exemption is strictly limited to Section 112A equity assets; non-equity assets under Section 112 do not receive this exemption. Furthermore, Section 112A provides an aggregate cumulative limit of ₹1.25 Lakhs across all equity sales in an entire financial year. This calculator evaluates only the single transaction entered and does not track or aggregate your cumulative annual capital gains across multiple trades.
No. For immovable property (land or building) acquired before 23 July 2024 by resident individuals or HUFs, the Finance (No. 2) Act, 2024 provides an optional grandfathering regime allowing taxpayers to choose between 12.5% tax without indexation and 20% tax with Cost Inflation Index (CII) indexation, whichever results in lower tax. This calculator strictly computes the standard 12.5% rate without indexation; it does not calculate indexation benefits, CII multipliers, or Section 54/54EC rollover relief.
Short-term capital gains on non-equity assets (such as property or gold held for 24 months or less, or debt mutual funds) are added to your gross total income and taxed at your applicable personal income tax slab rates. Use the Income Tax Calculator with your aggregate income to estimate your marginal tax bracket.
