How to Calculate GST in India: Add vs Remove GST Formulas & Slabs

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is India's unified indirect tax system applied at four primary tax slab rates (5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%). Whether you are a business owner issuing invoices or a consumer calculating net costs, this guide explains the mathematical formulas to add GST or reverse-calculate GST from an inclusive total.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1Identify the base price and the applicable GST slab rate (5%, 12%, 18%, or 28%).
  2. 2To add GST: Multiply the base price by (GST Rate / 100) to find the tax amount.
  3. 3Add the tax amount to the base price to calculate the gross invoice total.
  4. 4To remove GST: Divide the gross inclusive total by (1 + GST Rate / 100) to retrieve the original base price.

GST Tax Slabs in India

The GST Council categorizes goods and services into four major standard tax tiers: - 0% (Exempt): Essential unbranded food grains, fresh produce, milk, books, healthcare. - 5%: Household essentials, edible oil, tea, coffee, spices, life-saving medicines, economy air travel. - 12%: Business computers, processed food items, processed dairy, mobile phones. - 18%: Standard business services, IT services, financial services, software, restaurants, capital goods. - 28%: Luxury cars, tobacco products, carbonated beverages, five-star hotel stays.

Formula: Adding GST to a Net Base Price

When quoting a pre-tax amount and calculating the total bill: GST Amount = (Base Price × GST Rate) / 100 Total Price = Base Price + GST Amount Example: A SaaS software license costs ₹10,000 with 18% GST: - GST Amount = (10,000 × 18) / 100 = ₹1,800 - Final Bill = 10,000 + 1,800 = ₹11,800

Formula: Removing GST (Reverse GST Calculation)

When you know the gross inclusive total and need to extract the pre-tax base price and tax component: Base Price = Gross Amount / (1 + (GST Rate / 100)) GST Amount = Gross Amount - Base Price Example: You purchased an item for ₹5,900 inclusive of 18% GST: - Base Price = 5,900 / (1 + 0.18) = 5,900 / 1.18 = ₹5,000 - GST Component = 5,900 - 5,000 = ₹900

Intra-State vs Inter-State: CGST, SGST & IGST Split

- Intra-State Transaction (Seller and Buyer in same state): Tax is split 50/50 between Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST). For an 18% slab, 9% goes to CGST and 9% goes to SGST. - Inter-State Transaction (Seller and Buyer in different states): The entire 18% is billed as Integrated GST (IGST) directly to the Central Government.

Frequently asked questions

GST is calculated on the net discounted price, not the original MRP. Deduct the discount first, then apply the GST formula on the discounted amount.
